Zhanjiang Steelworks is imbued with the mission of building an efficient green carbon steel manufacturing base. It is committed to green manufacturing, actively exploring new areas of low-carbon metallurgy. The shaft furnace can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 500,000 tons/year if compared with those emitted by a traditional blast-furnace-based iron making facility of similar capacity.

The project will build China's first self-integrated shaft furnace, and the world's first shaft furnace that directly adds hydrogen for the reduction process, it is  expected to enhance Baowu's emissions reduction competitiveness, and marks a solid step toward the company's target of achieving carbon reduction by 30% by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

As the first Chinese engineering company that builds gas-based process direct reduction project, Sinosteel E&T has accomplished two world's biggest direct reduction plants -- Tosyali 2.5mtpa DRI plant and AQS 2.5mtpa DRI plant, both in Algeria and in production. It is also working on the DRI plant for Mutun Steelworks in Bolivia and the second 2.5mtpa DRI plant for Tosyali in Algeria.

The equipment supply contract follows the feasibility study and engineering which has been successfully finished. The shaft furnace will produce 1 million tons of DRI with the introduction of hydrogen will be one of the paths for steel companies to achieve the goal of 'carbon peaking'.
